US And UN Struggle To Distribute Haiti Aid

About 20 American military Black Hawk helicopters have descended on the ruined grounds of Haiti’s presidential palace.Troops unloaded equipment, water and food rations, raising hopes that it would become a forward base for the distribution of aid.Since the earthquake a week ago, Haitians desperate for life’s basics, and frustrated by the lack of aid reaching them, have posed an increasing headache for security services.Overstretched UN peacekeepers dispersed a crowd of survivors who were searching for anything, from water to a mat to sleep on.The Haitian police too have had their work cut out as lawlessness spreads throughout the capital Port au Prince. Shots rang out as scores of Haitians raided a destroyed hardware shop. And to help bring some semblance of normality back to Haiti’s streets, the UN Security Council has unanimously agreed to send 3.500 more troops and police in the hope they will afford some relief to the security forces already there.
